The Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) is a certification awarded to students in Western Australia upon successful completion of their secondary education. 

The WACE is overseen by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA) and is essential for students who wish to pursue further education or employment after high school.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Breadth and Depth: Students must complete a minimum of 20 units or the equivalent. This includes at least:
    • 10 Year 12 units or the equivalent.
    • 2 completed Year 11 English units and 2 completed Year 12 English units.
  • Achievement Standard: Students must achieve at least 14 C grades (or equivalent) in Year 11 and Year 12 units, with a minimum of 6 C grades in Year 12 units.
  • Literacy and Numeracy: Students must demonstrate a minimum standard of literacy and numeracy by passing the Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (OLNA).

Course Requirements

  • General and ATAR Courses: Students can choose from a variety of courses classified as ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) courses, which are designed for students aiming for university entrance, or General courses for those planning other post-secondary pathways.
  • VET and Endorsed Programs: Students can also undertake Vocational Education and Training (VET) programs and endorsed programs as part of their WACE requirements.

Assessment

  • School-Based Assessment: Students are assessed through various school-based assessments throughout the year.
  • External Examinations: For ATAR courses, students must sit for external examinations at the end of Year 12.
