What is a Unique Student Identifier (USI)?
Anyone undertaking education and training with a provider outside of the high school system must have a Unique Student Identifier (USI). Think of the USI as a Medicare number for education – it's a personal reference number that keeps track of all your nationally recognised training and qualifications in one place.
Who Needs a USI?
A Unique Student Identifier (USI) is essential for anyone enrolling in nationally recognised training at school or higher education in Australia. You will need a USI if you are:
- Studying a VET qualification
Including Certificates or Diplomas through TAFE or any Registered Training Organisation (RTO)
Note: Even if you're completing a VET course while still at school, you MUST have a USI.
- Enrolling in Higher Education
Such as university degrees, tertiary diplomas, or advanced qualifications delivered by TAFE or other providers
Why is a USI Important?
Without a USI, you:
- Can’t receive your qualification
- Can’t access Commonwealth financial assistance (like HECS-HELP)
With a USI, you:
- Can log in to your training record and see all your course results
- Can download and print your transcripts to share with employers or training providers
