Pathways to join the Australian Defence Force (ADF)
The Australian Defence Force offers several entry options to suit different career stages and educational backgrounds.

ADFA is a unique partnership between the ADF and the University of New South Wales (UNSW Canberra), offering students a fully funded tertiary education while completing military and leadership training. It is ideal for Year 12 graduates who want to become officers in the Navy, Army, or Air Force while earning a respected degree.
You’ll study and train at ADFA’s Canberra campus, where you can complete a degree in:
- Arts
- Business
- Engineering
- Science
- Technology
- Cyber Security

Graduate Entry
If you’ve completed a university degree, you may be eligible for Graduate Entry, which fast-tracks you into an officer role. You’ll receive:

If you're already studying a relevant degree at a civilian university, the ADF may sponsor your studies through the Defence University Sponsorship (DUS) program. This is a great option for students pursuing degrees in medicine, nursing, engineering, law, science, and more.

- ADF pays your remaining tuition fees (up to $10,000/year)
- Salary and allowances while you study
- Reimbursement for textbooks

- Minimal Defence training until after graduation

These roles don’t require prior qualifications. You train while earning, and many positions are available across trades, administration, logistics, and technical disciplines. Minimum education standards typically include Year 10 English and Maths, with some roles requiring Year 11/12 or specific subjects like Science or Physics.

You’ll experience a variety of roles and responsibilities—no obligation to stay on, but many participants go on to full-time Defence careers.
The Reserves offer flexible, part-time roles to complement existing careers. You’ll receive training, participate in humanitarian or peacekeeping missions, and gain leadership skills—all within a supportive, part-time structure.
